You can book as early or as late as you’d like, but many mamas find it most helpful to start between 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy. This gives you time to absorb the material, practice the techniques, and prepare spiritually, emotionally and physically for birth.
-
A professionally trained and experienced labor companion, a doula offers continuous mental, emotional, and physical support before, during, and after labor. They assist and support the mother and her partner to achieve their birthing goals. Consider them akin to a specialized massage therapist for women in labor, a trusted birth advisor, and a compassionate therapist all rolled into one!
-
While doulas and midwives have some overlap, they have distinctly different roles. Doulas provide you and your family with emotional, physical, informational, and advocacy support, during pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period. Midwives provide clinical care. They perform tasks like checking vitals, measurements, exams, etc. Many midwives also offer emotional support, information, and comfort during pregnancy and birth, but their priority is the physical health and safety of you and your baby.
-
Absolutely not! A doula doesn't replace the birth partner; instead, they complement each other. Doulas offer invaluable support to partners by guiding them on how to assist the mother best and providing them with opportunities to rest and recharge. Working closely with the birth partner, doulas leverage their training and expertise to actively empower partners to participate in the labor and birth process. After all, it takes teamwork to ensure a mother's comfort and well-being during labor!

Hospital classes are restricted by hospital policies, meaning they often focus on the procedures and pain relief methods available in that hospital. Independent classes give you a comprehensive view of all your options, empowering you to make decisions that best suit your needs.
